The following chapters explore selected ecosystem components; the benthic communities, life beneath the fast ice and ice shelves, recent advances in understanding decomposition processes, and the role of bacteria and protozoa.

The author synthesizes ecosystem dynamics, with an emphasis on the pelagic ecosystem. He covers resource exploitation, the impact of such exploitation on the marine ecosystem, and the problems involved in the management of the living resources. His epilogue summarizes the extent to which our understanding of the functioning of the Antarctic marine ecosystem has changed in the last 50 years; for example, there has been a dramatic change in our view of krill and its role in the Southern Ocean marine ecosystem. The book concludes with the statement that research carried out under the AGCS Programme and the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR) will continue to provide critical information on the functioning of Antarctic marine ecosystems.

Lots of room for improvement

Two specific things about this book keep me from rating it higher:

1- The book has a lot of errors. For instance, the polynomial equations for the stress concentration factors (K_I) in chapter 2 are labeled incorrectly. The diagrams for Center Cracked Tension and Double Edge Notched Tension are reversed. There are also other errors, but to list them all here would be pointless.

2- The problem set is close to worthless. Of the 600 page book, there are 18 pages of problems, or less than 100 total problems. The problems are not even that difficult. The "derivations" in the problem sets hardly require more than 2-3 lines of work, and very little deep thought. In other words, the problems are superficial.

Because of the lack of good problems and the errors (in fact, one of the problems seems to have an error in the difference between compliance and stiffness), I wouldn't feel comfortable using this book as a reference. No doubt, it does provide an excellent introduction or overview of fracture mechanics in general, but I would not feel comfortable with this book as my main source of information. There are also few examples with solutions to motivate learning. A good teacher is necessary to go beyond the basics of this text.

This book covers most of the fundamental topics in fracture mechanics. I recommend it to my undergraduate students. It is very easy to understand. This book is a fundamental source in fracture mechanics. It is a classic book recommended by numerous bibliographies regarding this field of study.

One of the best books in the field

A very readable book that explained complex concepts in an elementary fashion. It provides an overview of semantic web and secure semantic web. It then describes how the secure semantic web technologies for applications such as assured information sharing. The concepts in the book provide a very good overview of the foundations for Web 3.0 and beyond.

Extraordinary, Reasonably Priced, See Table of Contents & Image

I gained access to this book free, via the sponsor of our non-profit's first year of operations, or I would not have bought it. It must certainly be in the library of any university or college with ambitions to educate those who will lead the next wave moving us toward Web 3.0 and Web 4.0. It is however reasonably priced and I recommend it for both library acquisition and deep reader purchase.

The publisher has been responsible about posting useful information (see inside the book, the second active link below the cover on this page) so I urge anyone asking that this work be acquired, at this price, print and attach the table of contents to their requisition.

The book is very well-organized with ample white space and excellent illustrative graphics and figures. I particularly liked the positioning of the references at the end of each chapter rather than grouped at the end.

This is a masterpiece written by a pedagogue devoted to the subject. This book is a must-have for those who are serious about understanding computing algorithms and languages.

The author has written with a depth that requires regular reflection, as he writes in a succinct style, on topics that would possibly require (for some, especially undergraduates) reading other books to help understand parts of his explanations. He gives a nice history on the development of computer languages.

The reader must be able to put the book's project exercises into practice to benefit from what the book has to offer. It requires some programming experience, preferably in C, or better still, in Forth. It appears to have been written for a series of lectures given by the author. The Appendix shows a copy of a successful student's reflections on the course, and the student states that the course is intensive, requiring research into materials elsewhere to support his efforts. It is a book best needed by gifted post-graduates wishing to become experts in developing a compiler while creating a simple object language (called SOL in the book)

The book is best used while doing the course given by the author. However, it could still be of use to the experienced, self-taught (self-teaching) non-academic student. For the non-graduate, the book might warrant 2 stars; for the devoted, gifted, and practising student, the book could be worth at least 4 stars. I therefore give it 3 stars.
