In the next edition you can think of improving pedagogy. Most parts of the book beyond the first several introductory chapters look like resumes of research papers without additional explanations or involving any didactic "tools."

About the Author

Muhammad H. Rashid is a professor (and past director, 1997-2007) of electrical and computer engineering at the University of West Florida. Dr. Rashid received his BSc degree in electrical engineering from the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology, and his MSc and PhD degrees from the University of Birmingham in the United Kingdom. He has worked around the world as a professor of electrical engineering Dr. Rashid is actively involved in teaching, researching, and lecturing in power electronics. He has published 17 books and more than 140 technical papers. His books are adopted as textbooks all over the world. In addition, He has been invited by many foreign governments and agencies to give keynote lectures and consulted by foreign universities to serve as an external examiner for undergraduate, master’s degree, and PhD examinations, by funding agencies to review research proposals, and by U.S. and foreign universities to evaluate promotion cases for professorship. Among his many awards, Dr. Rashid has received the Outstanding Engineer Award from The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, the IEEE Educational Activity Award (EAB) for Meritorious Achievement Award in Continuing Education, and the IEEE Undergraduate Teaching Award.

Not worth the price

I consider this book not worthwhile for its purpose. The first six chapters (200 pages) regurgitate what is readily available from the PSpice User's Guide. It is followed by equally insipid description of diode and transistor device modeling. There is no discussion of transient step size control in PWM simulations, which I find problematic. And there is no mention of loop stability analysis which has to be one of the most important aspects of the power electronics. In the final chapter where it could really give some useful tips on how to use Spice effectively and how to overcome convergence problems and other difficulties, I'm disappointed to find that very little is offered.

Pretty good, all in all

I would rate this 3.5 to 4 stars, or thereabouts, but I had to balance out the ridiculous 1-star rating from the other reviewer.

I am an EE and designer, but not a SPICE expert. I often find answers in Prof. Rashid's book that I don't find in others. I think it is pretty good. If I had to pick three SPICE books, I'd pick Kielkowski's on modeling, Vladimirescu's, and this one. I'd pass on the others.

The other reviewer scold's the author regarding the PSPICE centric delivery. Well, that was all that was available to students for a long time. In point of fact, most the other books "I'd pass on" also are like that. To a point though, *that criticism is valid* for a book published in 2012. LTSpice has been available for many years, has no element limits, and is *free*. It is very powerful. No student should be using PSpice anymore, and authors should face up to reality. That said, does the author really need to fill that hole? Much SPICE syntax between the tool is the same, or highly similar, and that void is easily filled with free documentation quickly derived on an internet search, and the LTSpice Yahoo users group.

This is a decent book as a reference. I do open it up on occasion.
