Very poorly written and edited.

I purchased this book to help prepare for the June 2007 CISM exam. I read the first 100 or so pages before deciding that I could not trust the info in this book to be accurate. The book is poorly written and I am not sure it was ever edited. I showed a co-worker a few of the errors in the book and he commented that "this is terrible".

One example paragraph from Page 87:

START OF PARAGRAPH

"Whichever risk mitigation technique is used, the business objectives or mission of an organization must be considered when selecting any of these techniques. It may not be practical."

END OF PARAGRAPH

Huh? What may not be practical?

Avoid this book.

I would not recommend this book, had I not highlighted a few things in the beginning, I would be returning it.

technical errors, poor writing, terrible editing, bad humor

I give this book one star just out of my courtesy as there is no way to post a review if you give no star at all.

So, let's get to the point: if you know the topics discussed in this book you will find lots of technical errors and will be disappointed by wasted money and time you spent; if you do not but rather an attentive thinking reader - you will definitely spot discrepancies and inconsistencies that shall raise red flags to you and direct you to better sources.

If your goal is just about to memorize this book and pass an exam - than it would be your choice to contribute into the already overly commercialized field helping the authors further raise agiotage by endorsing their poor job, and further lower the trust in the profession.

Lots of unwarranted repetitions - seems the authors wanted to make the volume bigger, which is annoying. At the same time many topics are missing, whereas some dive deep into unnecessary to the security management details.

Up to the quality of the editors - there was a poor job too: spelling mistakes, missing sentences.

Well, apparently this is an example of how good people can do bad job...

PS. Comment on humor is definitely very subjective, but I did not find the author's humor neither sharp nor smart.

Mechanistic Toxicology is technical, well-organized, and well-researched synopsis of the fundamentals of Toxicology.

A highly technical textbook to the undergraduate student but a toxicological review informed by more relevant examples to the expert, Mechanistic Toxicology is a well-organized and well-researched synopsis of the fundamentals of Toxicology.
Chapters are structured to present the topics first in the "Contents" section, dive deeper into each topic with helpful headings and examples, summarize and simplify what was presented in the "Learning Points" section, and lastly, to suggest further reading. Examples provided in the body of each chapter can get highly technical, though the main points of the chapter are never lost in even the most extended example.
The abundance of examples and in-depth discussions on specific mechanisms makes this book optimal for someone who already has some background in biology and an understanding of toxicological concepts. The reader who hopes to develop a basic understanding of toxicology should look elsewhere, unless that reader is willing to commit substantial amounts of time pulling the basics out of the somewhat technical contents of this book
Finally, the review question and answer section in the back of the book and the index are useful tools that demonstrate the author's ability to make technical concepts more understandable, considering that the reader has some background in related topics. The book is well equipped to explain concepts that may be beyond that reader's understanding.

Structures and the properties resulting from structure of substances, coupled with transport proteins and membrane composition, determine if a xenobiotic can enter a cell and remain there long enough to demonstrate toxic effects.

Ch. 4 Bioactivation of Xenobiotics and Reactive Metabolites
Toxicity is often induced when a substance is metabolized from its original form.

Ch. 5 Xenobiotic-induced Oxidative Stress: Cell Injury, Signaling, and Gene Regulation
Oxidative species are created all the time in equilibrium with antioxidants, but when the equilibrium favors oxidative species (ROS, RNS) cell damage occurs.

Ch. 6 Disruption of Cellular Calcium Homeostasis
Calcium is critical in regulating cell metabolism, activating enzymes and other proteins, and acting as a second messenger, but different xenobiotics can interfere with calcium in all of these processes.

Necrosis is relatively random and unorganized cell death, whereas apoptosis is organized cell death that involves signals received by death receptors, action by caspases and checkpoints along the way.

Must have for any tox student

My only complaint for this book is the lack of chemical equations but beyond that this book is absolutely wonderful. I discovered it accidentally while doing an assignment from the Google preview and knew I should have it to prepare for my qualifying exams. It has all the classic toxic agents, gives history of them, and the explanations for the mechanisms are simple, easy to understand and quite detailed. And when a toxicant has multi-system effects he references them for you, so it's easy to keep track. He also provides his sources for further reading at the end of the chapter. I love this book!

I don't feel the need to reiterate the praises that have been given this book as to its usefulness for latent print examiners.
I can say, however, that this book is great for students of forensic science (like myself) or the average reader as well. Unlike popular accounts of forensic science, it is not thrilling or adventurous. Those types of books will tell you that a person can leave a fingerprint at a scene, an investigator can find it, and then match it up in a database. Slim on the details, high on the "excitement" scale. And unlike the average MFS class, it is not dry, boring, and intended to give you only enough knowledge to do some damage.
So, for those of us interested in how forensic science -actually- works, and in depth, this book is a great textbook covering all aspects of fingerprint analysis. It includes a particularly good chapter detailing nothing but the ways that fingerprints are formed in vitro - their creation, topology, and cross-section. It includes detail on the many ways that a print can be deposited, as well as the different substrates and surfaces they can be deposited on, and the types of distortion that each of these can cause. This book is not light reading, but if you are truly interested in learning more about how fingerprints work, and how analysts can identify them, then you should have no trouble enjoying this book.
If I were to point out only one flaw, it would be that Ashbaugh's agenda is too much in the fore. I would rather read about how fingerprints are analyzed than hear propaganda backing up the field as a legitimate science. His analysis in and of itself is adequate to illustrate the scientific principles underlying latent print analysis. It would have been more interesting for him to mention some of the reasons people believe that it is -not- a legitimate science, and refute those through simply through the precision of his text.

If you are a latent print examiner, this book is an absolute must have. Friction ridge skin is unique and persistent. Ridgeolgy will give you a better understanding of friction ridge skin. The book also will also help you explain what you see when you make an identification. If you live in the world of point counters, this book will shock and amaze you. David Ashbaugh is a true visionary in the forensic identification world. This book should be in every crime scene investigator's library.

Can be understood by an undergraduate physics major.

This is a book written for mathematicians, yet it is accessible to an upper level physics undergraduate. Much of the book explains concepts very well, at other times I was very frustrated. The DOS based software included with the book did not seem to work as billed on my systems. A high point of the book is Walkers 2 dimensional Fourier optics section. This section does an excellent job on a complex topic.
