About the Author
Alan Rogers holds the post of Special Professor of Adult Education in the School of Continuing Education of the University of Nottingham. He has been engaged in adult education in both community and academic contexts for nearly forty years. He served as Executive Director of Education for Development based at the University of Reading for thirteen years, retiring from that post in 1998 to freelance as an adult trainer.

Excellent introduction to optoelectronics

For anyone looking for a highly readable, general overview of the subject of optoelectronics with a strong focus on the underlying physics, then I highly recommend this book. What makes this book slightly different from others is that the author has paid careful attention to the arrangement of material such that virtually all background material is covered before it is required to explain the relevant topics. This is no easy task since the field of optoelectronics draws upon many areas of physics such as quantum and statistical mechanics, geometrical optics, nonlinear optics, electromagnetism, semiconductor devices and solid state physics. The author also introduces the basics of many of the concepts early on and then returns to them latter to provide more rigorous (but not overly so) detail. This is a very effective method of helping the reader digest all the facts. Supporting mathematical theory are also provided throughout and again the author has struck a fine balance between providing sufficient mathematical rigor to support the physical explanations but avoiding overly complex mathematical derivations which can be found in more specialized literature. This book can be used as a reference book, however, its best attribute is to provide a compelling cover-to-cover read and credit should go to the author for bringing out the interesting physics with lucid descriptions in what in some cases can be somewhat dry subjects.
Many applications are discussed with particular emphasis on fiber optic systems, a field in which the author has many years experience and these provide an ideal platform to demonstrate many of the concepts described in the book.
Both graduate students studying this field and practicing scientists and engineers requiring a review of background material will find this book useful. This is also a good book for undergraduate students looking for how the various areas of general physics can be applied to practical applications.
