A "must" for your process library

First off, I have to say this book is somewhat difficult to read. Goodman seems to dribble out information a little at a time, and its difficult to understand the key concepts. The first three chapters are mainly fluff. There's no real detail, and it's difficult to see where he's going. I almost gave up reading the book. But starting with chapter 4, the details slowly began to emerge. When I finished chapter 5, I finally began to grasp what the book was all about.
Goodman is not the best writer, but he certainly is THE "process guy". He's the first person that I encountered that knows how to implement processes. I have worked with many so-called experts--some from SEI who are CMMI consultants and appraisers--and none were able to provide the help that Goodman provided. He shows the relationship between lifecycles, processes, work breakdown structures (WBS), charge numbers, and schedules. He describes how all of these can be tied together with a web-based framework that a web developer can use to build the proposed solution. Although Goodman presents an excellent way to structure a process, the book is not about how to write a process decription or a procedure. He does, however, point out some key differences between the two so that you can tell where a preocess description ends and a procedure begins.
Some concepts such as "design-down" however, are introduced before they are clearly defined. I found that true for other concepts too such as "selectors". Also, the charge numbering scheme could have been presented in a much better way, or summarized in a single table. I took me several hours of paging back-and-forth before I understood it. In fact, there was way too much back-and-forth paging to understand a lot of what he was saying. I felt that to meet some minimum chapter requirement, he felt it necessary to repeat things, and break information up and spread it around among several chapters. If he did it to keep the reader in suspense, its affect was just the opposite. If it weren't for the book's poor readability, I'd give this book a 5-star rating.
If you plan to purchase this book, you may want to purchase and first read his other book "Defining and Deploying Software Processes". Goodman refers to it and I believe assumes the reader has read it. I believe having read that book first may have help with better understanding this one.
